Squash Section Report to the Executive Committee
5th December, 2002

Squash Activities

The Handicap Competition was won by Ed Thorneywork, an extremely skilful young player, who used all his knowledge (and a generous handicap) to beat the experienced David Potter in a hard fought final. The Plate final was contested by two of the oldest players in the competition, Bob Speake overcoming Brian Cole to take the trophy, which he last won in 1992. A pleasing aspect of the tournament was the successful participation of a large number of beginners and several of our juniors. Particular credit is due to Lauren Campbell for reaching the semi-finals, and Victoria Porter the quarter-finals of the Plate. All games were played to the highest standards of sportsmanship, and we are grateful to Paul for once again organising a superb competition, and to Steve Dyke, Neil Thorneywork, and the many other competitors who shared the task of marking the matches.

Following their participation in the England Squash coaching course at the Club, Paul Heneghan and Ed Thorneywork have qualified as England Squash Level 1 Assistant Coaches. Congratulations to them on their success.

Social & Administrative

As previously announced, we are planning to hold our now traditional Christmas curry night on Thursday 19 December at Maheens, and afterwards at Marilyns. Please enter your names on the list on the Squash notice board if you want to join us. The Section AGM will be held at the Club beforehand.

Squash Courts

We have written formally to Watson Brook seeking a satisfactory resolution to the problem with the floors, and are awaiting their response. We are grateful to Catherine Arkell for her advice in this matter.

John Parry has now received a positive response from the suppliers of the lighting installations, confirming that they will replace faulty items free of charge, subject to return of the defective units to them. Many thanks to Errol and Pete Scully for their work in replacing the units replaced so far.

Club Facilities

Lady members have expressed their appreciation of the work carried out in their changing room, following representations at the last meeting. Unfortunately the problem of the car park has not received such prompt attention.
