Squash Section Report to the Executive Committee
6th June, 2002
Squash Activities
The main season is now over, but court usage is still quite high. Several of
our players have been very upset by the intermittent availability of hot
showers, which has caused us much inconvenience. Nevertheless, we appreciate
Mark Dewdney's efforts to keep the boiler going, and hope that the problem has
now been overcome. Club Night continues, albeit with reduced attendances on
Thursday evenings, and our Men's team is holding its own in the Worcestershire
Summer League.
Junior coaching will continue on Saturday mornings until the end of the
Summer term, and our junior girls will be taking part in a Worcestershire County
Junior training session to be held at the Club shortly.
Squash Gallery
We are hoping to complete the outstanding work on the Squash Gallery during
the Summer. This will include the introduction of a second tier of viewing
space, with storage below for club rackets, eye protectors etc. The present
storage area will then no longer be accessible. It is our intention to
incorporate an area in the gallery for the bookings book, squash magazines and
annuals. We also hope to have new floor coverings in place for the new season.
Squash Courts
We are still awaiting a response from Stuart Brooks of Watson Brook,
following the meeting on the condition of the floors. Bill Pevy of England
Squash has written formally to him, seeking his proposals to follow up the
issues raised at the meeting. Errol has been discussing with Unsquashable
(suppliers of squash equipment) the possibility of their advertising on the side
walls of the courts.
Evesham High School
We have not had any further contact from Evesham High School since offering
them the use of the courts.
England Squash Coaching Courses
We have agreed to host an England Squash Grade 1 Coaching course, on the
weekend 30 Nov/1 Dec. Unfortunately, this coincides with the Head of the River
event, but should not be a problem as the involvement of club members will be
minimal. The agreed charge for the use of the courts is £100. Visitors will
have access to the Bar, and we will provide light refreshments.
I am happy to report that Errol Ferris has recently successfully completed a
Grade 3 Coaching Course.
Awards for All
With the help of Gayle Kerrison, England Squash Area Development Officer, we
have prepared an Application for an award under the Awards for All Scheme, to
finance and provide coaching and equipment for coach education, volunteer
training, school contacts, Club open days, and coaching for women and juniors,
at a total cost of £4,746. This will be submitted shortly, hoping that the
requested grant may be available around the start of the new season.
