Squash Section Report to the Executive Committee
11th April 2002
Competitions
After looking to be in danger of relegation, the Men's 1st team finished the
season in style, and ended up in 5th place in the Worcestershire Premier
Division. In the Gloucestershire Veterans League, our A Team retained the
championship, but lost in the finals of the Team knock out cup. Moreton in Marsh
Fire College, consisting almost entirely of Club members, have taken 2nd place
in the Gloucestershire League, winning promotion to the Premier League.
Squash Gallery
Many thanks to Errol and his team of painters and decorators who have given
the Viewing Gallery its first makeover in nearly 30 years. Mary Boyle (of MD
Designs) prepared the layouts, and Errol, Karen, Steve, Ros, Wayne, Gilly, Neil,
Richard, Paul, Ben and I provided the labour. There is still more work to be
done, as we are planning to erect a second tier for viewing and storage, install
modern lighting throughout the Gallery (thanks to John Parry Lighting), and
replace the floor covering.
Congratulations
To Russell and Camilla on their marriage, and to Glenn on being selected for
the Worcestershire County over 35 team.
Club Championship Finals and Social Event
The Club Championships start this weekend, culminating in the finals on
Saturday 27 April. These will be followed by a Disco and Buffet Supper and
presentations, including our England Squash Club Charter Award. The food is
guaranteed to be excellent, and members of all sections will be welcome.
Squash Courts
We are still awaiting a response from Watson Brook, following the meeting on
the condition of the floors. Bill Pevy of England Squash is endeavouring to make
contact with him, to discuss follow up action.
We have been experiencing problems with the court heating, which forms part
of the overall Clubhouse heating system. It seems that we do not have sufficient
flexibility to react to temperature movements, and other parts of the Club have
also been noticeably cold. We are concerned that the periodical lack of heating
may have contributed to the higher than usual levels of injury suffered in
recent months. It is also probable that this has contributed to problems of
humidity on court.
We have agreed a three year contract with Karakal, for the advertisement of
their products on the "tin". This will bring in £100 per annum to the
Club.
Evesham High School We have been in discussion with Evesham High School, who
are interested in using the courts for one afternoon a week during the Summer
term. We hope to finalise plans shortly.
