Squash Section Report to the Executive Committee
7th March

Gloucestershire Veterans Squash League Team Knockout Competition

We have reached the finals of this event for the sixth year in succession, and hope to retain the trophy when the final is contested at the East Gloucestershire Club on 17 March.

Junior Squash

Members of our Junior Squad took part in an inaugural Worcester Junior Open Day at Manor Park, and very much enjoyed playing and training with young people from other clubs within the county. Both the playing standards and knowledge of the game of our Juniors were noted, and we look forward to participation in the County Junior programme, including the introduction of Junior leagues.

Club Championship Finals and Social Event

A reminder that the Club Championships will be taking place from 6 April, with the finals on Saturday afternoon, 27 April. They will be followed by a Disco and Buffet Supper and presenations, including our England Squash Club Charter Award. Members of all sections will be welcome.

Squash Courts

The meeting arranged with Junckers, Watson Brook, England Squash and ourselves to examine the condition of the squash court floors duly took place, and we have received Reports from both Junckers and Bill Pevy of England Squash. We are still awaiting a Report from Watson Brook. The findings were very much in line with the conclusions at our original meeting with Junckers, who now agree that the floor was incorrectly laid. Bill Pevy has proposed that Watson Brook be asked to repair the damaged floor in Court 2, and trim the edge boards to the recommended width, which should then be left to settle down. If, as he suspects will be the case, they have settled within three months, the floors should be lifted and relaid with sub floor battens at the correct centres, with a suitable damp proof membrane, and be lightly sanded. It is his opinion that the expansion of the boards was partly due to humidity conditions in the atmosphere outside the control of Watson Brook, and that the rectification cost should be split, as to 25% to the Club, and 75% to Watson Brook. This recommendation has not been passed to Watson Brook, pending receipt of their own proposals, and I anticipate that we may have some difficulty in securing their agreement, notwithstanding their admission at the meeting of specific failures in the laying of the floors.

Heating

It now seems probable that the Club heating arrangements last autumn contributed to the problem with the squash court floors, in that the heating and airflow were insufficient to disperse a high level of humidity in the atmosphere, particularly before the heating had been switched on. This could well be a recurring problem, and we shall be seeking advice as to how best to monitor humidity, and what action to take to minimize its impact on the floors. We are also investigating the costs of providing heating for Court 3, which at present has none, and remains consistently colder than the other two courts.

Squash Gallery

We are planning to refurbish the Viewing Gallery shortly, and proposals have been published on the Squash notice boards. We are grateful to Mary Boyle for her work on the design layouts. The plans include the removal and disposal of all irrelevant lockers etc, the building of an additional intermediate tier for viewing and storage, the provision of modern lighting for the entire gallery, and the painting of the walls and ceilings. At some stage we also hope to renew the flooring. The total costs should not exceed £400.

Sponsorship

We are in discussion with Karakal, suppliers of squash rackets and equipment, with a view to letting the spaces below the tin for advertising purposes, and would hope to raise up to £500 for approved advertising over a 3 year period. We are also considering whether additional side-wall space could be utilised in this way.
