Squash Section Report to the Executive Committee
6th September 2001

I shall be away at the time of the Executive Meeting, and present my apologies. Vice captain Errol Ferris will be representing the Squash section at the Meeting

The new season commences on 1st October, with fixtures for the three Mens’ teams arranged for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in each week, alternatively home and away. The Ladies will be arranging their fixtures for Mondays. After several years as 2nd team captain, Clive Simons has indicated that he is stepping down. We very much appreciate the contribution that he has made to Club Squash, and trust that his injuries will not prevent him from playing the occasional “friendly”. (if any game of squash can be so described !!). George Oxley has also announced his retirement from veteran team squash, but is not ready to give up playing yet. The teams will be competing this season in a new strip in Club colours. Errol is very kindly sponsoring the Ladies’ team, and will be supplying the other teams at cost. The strip will be available to other players at normal retail prices.

The annual open Handicap Competition and Plate have already been announced, and will take place over the last two weekends in September, and the first weekend in October, with the finals on Sunday 7th October. Visit our website at www.eveshamsquash.co.uk to follow the progress of the various matches.

Club Night has proved to be very popular, and has continued throughout the summer, albeit on a very much reduced scale. It has been particularly gratifying that team players have attended regularly, and have helped beginners to improve their technique and knowledge of the game. We shall be relaunching Club Night ahead of the new season. The Club has also benefited greatly from the availability of professional coaching by Errol Ferris, and this has helped a number of players to improve their games significantly. He has already restarted regular Ladies’ coaching sessions to which ladies of all standards are welcome.

We are planning to introduce Junior coaching sessions on a regular basis, for members, their friends and guests, with a view to increasing interest in the game at an early age. Details will be published on the Squash notice boards, and young people from all sections of the Club will be most welcome. The SRA, which now operates under the brand name England Squash (they probably got the idea from Evesham Squash!) has a structured development and training programme, which we shall be following. We shall need to purchase a bag of supplies, including reduced size rackets, balls, manuals etc. Errol will be able to give an indication of the approximate cost at the Meeting.

It is now nearly three years since the courts were refurbished, and some minor maintenance needs to be undertaken before the start of the new season; John Johnson has kindly offered to replace the defective light on court 1.

Congratulations to Neil Thorneywork, whose swift and surreptitious marriage caught us all by surprise.
