Squash Section Report to the Executive Committee
1st March 2001
Members may be relieved to learn that there is not a lot to report this
month!
The Veteran's have reached the final of the Gloucestershire Veterans' League
Team Competition.
There are signs of deterioration on the front wall of No 1 court, and a
recurrence of the loose flooring on No 2 court, possibly due to excessive
dampness in the atmosphere. It is now over 2 years since the courts were re commissioned,
and we may need to have some preventative maintenance undertaken shortly. We
shall be watching the situation carefully.
I am proposing that George Oxley should be appointed a Vice President of the
Club. I have known George since he joined the Club in 1973, and his contribution
both to the Squash section and to the Club in the past 28 years has been
outstanding. He took up the sport with the enthusiasm and commitment which we
all know and admire, improving rapidly to become a member of the original 3rd
team squad. He has represented the Club regularly ever since, and is presently
captain of the Veterans' C Team. He Became Vice captain of Squash in 1977, when
there were over 400 squash playing members, and Captain from 1978 to 1980, and
won the Club Veteran's Championship in 1985. His experience, sportsmanship and
wisdom were recognised last year by the Gloucestershire Veterans' Squash League
when they appointed him as President. Closely involved in all aspects of the
Club, including now the organisation of Bar supplies, he and Joan are invariably
in the thick of the action at regattas and major social events, and can always
be relied upon to help. I believe that recognition of his efforts is long
overdue, and have much pleasure in making this proposition.
I have this week become aware of plans to locate the lift exit into the
Squash Gallery behind Court 2. This is the only court with viewing facilities,
about half of which would be permanently lost. Persons using the lift would have
to pass through the gallery behind courts 1 & 2, and this would cause
serious disruption to the control and viewing of matches, club tournaments and
events and training sessions. Whilst there might initially be little use made of
the lift, the fact of its being there will cause it to be used progressively,
and I am opposed to the location of the lift where presently planned. I am
suggesting that it be sited elsewhere in the Club, or that we provide chair lift
facilities as a less expensive alternative. I will be seeking the views of
squash playing members, and it will be necessary to advise the SRA of the
reduction in squash facilities. Their endorsement of the Development Plan is
required in support of the Lottery Application.
The bell nuisance referred to in my last Report continues.
